NEW YORK – The Boston Red Sox have placed setup man Chris Martin on the 15-day injured list ahead of their series opener against the Yankees in New York due to soreness in his right elbow.

Boston has recalled left-handed reliever Cam Booser to take his place.

“We’ll know more over the weekend,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “He wasn’t feeling too well after the last game. He was kind of sluggish and sore. We think it’s just a minor thing. But obviously, being in the season, with the day off on Monday and the All-Star break, it doesn’t make sense to send him out there and lose him for an extended period of time. So this is the move.”

Martin, 38, threw a scoreless inning against Miami on Wednesday. He has a 3.42 ERA, 29 strikeouts and two walks in 26 games (26 1/3 innings) this season. His injury is listed as “elbow inflammation.”

Cora said no imaging is planned at this time.

“Today he tried to play catch,” Cora said. “It started out well, but after that he felt tense. So we’re going to take him out. Like I said, we’ll know more over the weekend. If he has to go to Boston (to get checked out), he’ll go to Boston.”

Martin missed 14 games from June 2-18 because of anxiety and was also dealing with an injury to his left shoulder (not throwing arm) that affected his throwing performance early in the season.

YANKEES: Manager Aaron Boone spoke to Trent Grisham about the center fielder’s lack of commitment in the ninth inning of an 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds and said it “painted a bad picture.”

Grisham failed to attack Jeimer Candelario’s hit with two outs on Thursday, then dropped the ball and made an error that allowed Candelario to reach second base. The Yankees were subsequently swept by the Reds, their 13th loss in 17 games.

“It’s a bad picture,” Boone said Friday, “but at the same time, one of the reasons he’s a Gold Glove center fielder is his heart rate, his reading ability, his leaping ability, the ease with which he plays the position. You don’t want to lose that. But you have to be careful about certain routine things.”

ANGEL: Los Angeles placed third baseman Luis Rengifo on the 10-day injured list due to inflammation in his right wrist.

BRAVES: Atlanta continued to fill holes in its outfield by signing Eddie Rosario to a minor league contract and recalling Eli White from Triple-A Gwinnett to start in left field for Friday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rosario was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals on Monday and released on Wednesday. Rosario hit .183 with seven home runs this season with Washington and will hope for a better performance when he reunites with the Braves organization.

GAMES ON FRIDAY

BOY 5, ANGEL 1: Justin Steele threw a two-hitter in his first career complete game, Seiya Suzuki hit a home run and the Cubs won at home.

Steele (1-3) shined in his first win in 13 starts this season. The left-hander threw 95 pitches, had seven strikeouts and two walks, and lowered his ERA from 3.20 to 2.95.
