Temperatures in Death Valley could reach record levels: Current forecast

Temperatures in Death Valley could reach record levels: Current forecast

Temperatures in Death Valley National Park are expected to soar this weekend, possibly reaching highs of 59 degrees on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

If the temperature rises above 130 degrees, it would set a record for the highest temperature ever “reliably measured on Earth,” Scientific American reports.

The highest temperature ever reliably measured is 130 degrees and was measured twice in Death Valley in 2020 and 2021. Both values have yet to be confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Long-standing maximum temperature records from a century ago have been met with skepticism in recent years. The record of 134 degrees in Death Valley in 1913 has been questioned as to its accuracy, as has a reading of 131 degrees in Tunisia in 1931. And a reading of 136.4 degrees in Libya in 1922 was officially discredited by the WMO in 2012.

And will it be 130 degrees in the next few days?

“The threshold is certainly not outside the realm of possibility,” Chris Outler, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Las Vegas office who forecasts weather in Death Valley, told USA TODAY on Wednesday.

Temperature forecast for Death Valley

The following maximum temperatures are forecast for Furnace Creek in Death Valley next week:

  • Saturday: 126 degrees
  • Sunday: 129 degrees
  • Monday: 127 degrees
  • Tuesday: 128 degrees
  • Wednesday: 126 degrees
  • Thursday: 125 degrees

The heat can also be felt in the Coachella Valley

About 300 miles south, in the Coachella Valley, residents could see 11 days in a row of temperatures of 115 degrees or more, the Desert Sun, part of the USA TODAY Network, previously reported. The weather service said that would break the previous record of nine days with temperatures of at least 115 degrees set in 2021.

The absolute record for Palm Springs is 123 degrees and was measured on June 17, 2021.

There is a 20% chance of breaking the 123-degree record on Saturday. The probability of an all-time record on Saturday is 8%.

In the Central Valley, the city of Fresno is expected to reach 115 degrees on Saturday, setting a record for that day.
