Taylor Swift fans are fed up with the high ticket prices for the pop sensation’s Era Tour and many can no longer afford it.
With prices for cheap seats starting at over $2,000, the domestic ticket market has become increasingly unaffordable. This has led to a growing trend known as “gig tripping”: fans traveling internationally to see their favorite artists at cheaper prices.
In the midst of this trend, US Swifties have decided to head to Amsterdam, where the “All Too Well” singer is scheduled to take the stage at the Johan Cruijff Arena over the next two nights. As of Friday afternoon, ticket prices for tonight’s show (July 5) start at $339.50 on StubHub and around $687 on Vivid Seats. Ticket prices for her July 6 show ranged from around $397 on StubHub to $415 on Ticket Club.

The concept of traveling for concerts is not entirely new, but has gained significant traction given the exploding prices in the US. According to a report by Skyscanner44% of U.S. travelers are willing to take short-haul flights to see their favorite artists, and 18% would even take long-haul flights for the experience.
These statistics are supported by United Airlines, which reported a 25% increase in flights to Lisbon, Portugal, where Swift performed on May 24 and 25, compared to last summer. In addition, there was a 45% increase in passenger numbers on United flights to Milan and Munich, where Swift is also scheduled to perform in July.
This phenomenon doesn’t just affect travel; it affects the global economy in a phenomenon dubbed “Swiftonomics.” A report from Barclays estimates that over a million fans will attend Swift’s 15 concerts in the UK, each spending around £848 ($1,080) on tickets, accommodation, food and other travel-related expenses.
In addition, the influx of fans travelling to concerts provides a significant boost to the local economy. The “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” singer played at Wembley Stadium on June 21, 22 and 23 and will return for five more shows in August. In total, the eight performances are expected to bring £300 million (€355 million/$380 million) to the London economy.
After Amsterdam, Swift will perform two concerts at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich on July 9 and 10. From there, the singer will stop in various European cities, including Warsaw and Vienna, before returning to London on August 15 for her final five European performances.
After the end of the European tour, Swift is scheduled to return to North America, where she will perform multi-day tours in Miami, New Orleans, Indianapolis and Toronto before her final concert in Vancouver on December 8.
