BSP chief from Tamil Nadu hacked to death by six men on bicycles in Chennai

Chennai:

In a brazen attack, the leader of Tamil Nadu’s Bahujan Samaj Party was hacked to death by six men on motorcycles near his home in Chennai on Friday.

The six men attacked Armstrong as he was talking to some party officials near his home in the Sembium district and then fled. His family took him to hospital, but he was pronounced dead.

Police officials said it was a revenge killing linked to the killing of gangster Arcot Suresh last year. A senior police officer told NDTV, “We are conducting an investigation. The murder appears to be linked to an earlier murder.”

Some reports say the attackers posed as food delivery drivers, but police have not yet confirmed this.

The police inspector of Sembium was tasked with solving the case.

The opposition attacked the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, saying the murder was evidence of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Opposition leader Edappadi Palaniswamy said: “What can I say when the state president of a national party is murdered? Law and order is a disgrace. There is no fear of the law or the police.”

Armstrong is a lawyer and was elected to the Chennai City Council in 2006. He became famous when he organised a mass rally in Chennai two years ago and invited BSP leader Mayawati.

In a post on X, Mayawati called Armstrong a strong voice for Dalits and demanded that the guilty be punished.

“The gruesome murder of Mr. K. Armstrong, leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the state of Tamil Nadu, outside his house in Chennai is highly unfortunate and reprehensible. He was a lawyer by profession and was known as a strong voice of the Dalit people in the state. The state government must punish the culprits,” she wrote.
