Chris Godwin of the Buccaneers takes on the role of “Cooper Kupp” in the newly aligned offense

Chris Godwin of the Buccaneers takes on the role of “Cooper Kupp” in the newly aligned offense

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a lot of room for improvement for the 2024-2025 season and the passing game will once again play a big role.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Liam Coen are reportedly working on a new plan for receiver Chris Godwin that could put him close to Cooper Kupp on the field, for better or for worse.

The unveiling of the new plan coincided with the announcement that three prospects would be cut from the Buccaneers’ roster and three underrated dark horse players who could break out this season.

Will Godwin, Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers return to the playoffs and go even further this time? That could depend on how Mayfield’s weapons are used and whether they can hold their own against top-notch secondaries.

Kupp was named the 2021-2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP, and much of his success was due to the Rams’ use of Sean McVay and Matt Stafford.

Now, Chris Godwin could move all over the field and work in the middle of the defense, just like Kupp did this season, this time for Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers. The news comes to X, according to reporter Greg Auman.

“The Bucs have said they’re going to use Godwin in the slot after moving him to the outside last year to avoid injuries,” Auman said. “That’s the role Cooper Kupp had with the Rams when Coen was there.”

Godwin’s big year 2023 had a glaring omission

Godwin was a workhorse for Mayfield and Coach Bowles last season, hauling in over 80 catches for 1,024 yards.

However, the former 2017 third-round pick only managed two touchdowns, suggesting the Buccaneers could find more creative ways to get the football to him, especially in the red zone. Godwin has the ability to play all over the field. At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, he has the size and strength to dominate both inside and outside the field.

Now it’s up to Coen, Bowles and Mayfield to use him to their best advantage. Many fantasy owners were shocked at the few touchdowns the former Penn State Nittany Lion scored, but Godwin could have a breakout season in that regard if the Buccaneers’ coaches do their job as well as they can. This potential change in style from Cooper Kupp could be the straw that broke the camel’s back for Mayfield and Co.
