LCBO will be closed for 14 days as negotiations broke down, resulting in a strike today at 00:01

Not many people were surprised to learn that the LCBO is closed today as thousands of workers went on strike.

This is the first time ever that the LCBO has gone on strike in the province.

The strike date was originally set by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which represents thousands of workers at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. The strike went into effect at 12:01 a.m. today, prompting thousands of workers to picket in the middle of a hot summer.

But don’t worry, you can still order your alcohol online.

Officials hope an agreement can be reached quickly. The latest proposal was presented Thursday afternoon and was a response to demands from numerous workers, but the union did not make a counterproposal.

The LCBO says its stores will now be closed for 14 days, but online ordering and free home delivery will still be available.

Several local convenience stores have already applied for permits to begin selling in September, including Becker’s on Upper Middle Road and Esso Circle K at 1447 Lakeshore Rd.

Holders of a convenience store license and/or a new grocery store license (issued on or after June 17, 2024) may not sell or offer for sale alcohol in their stores before: September 5 (convenience stores) and October 31 (new grocery store licenses).
