Jason Derulo spoke about how he almost died in the gym where the musician was working out to get in shape for a major tour in 2013. Speaking to Paris Hilton on her podcast, the “Whatcha Say” singer opened up about his difficult time in life when the star broke his neck while training on the heavy equipment.

The singer recalled hearing a crack and thinking it would cost him his life. In preparation for the tour, Derulo’s trainer asked him to do backflips on a board, which ultimately led to the artist’s injuries.

In 2013, Jason Derulo broke his neck while practicing backflips on the plank before a major tour. The Hands on Me singer recalled the horrific incident, saying, “He made me do about 50 backflips in a row, which is one of the worst ideas anyone has ever had.”

The singer added: “I slipped during one of the back tucks and landed on my head, breaking the second vertebra in my neck.”

Derulo claimed that after falling on his back, he heard a cracking sound and imagined all sorts of scenarios. The singer’s mother was waiting outside the gym, and the Swalla singer revealed that he tried to stay as calm as possible so his mother wouldn’t panic.

Derulo said, “I didn’t want to worry her, so after five minutes on the floor, I pulled myself together and walked to the car holding my neck.” The singer continued, “And then I said, ‘Mom, I think I hurt myself a little bit’ – so in this light voice – ‘I think I hurt myself a little bit inside; we should probably go to the hospital to get it checked out.'”

In an interview with Paris Hilton, the singer revealed that on the way to the hospital, he tried his best to hide the pain from his mother, but every bump that came along the way felt like hell. The Savage Love singer said: “Now every single bump (in the car) feels like hell on earth. I’m just dying in the passenger seat, but I don’t want her to know that.”

Jason Derulo said he was on the road to recovery after his injury by being productive and continuing to pay attention to his health and diet.
