Teenager convicted in Brianna Higgins’ death

Apartments where the fatal shooting in Olathe took place

Olathe Police are investigating a homicide in which 15-year-old Brianna Rachelle Higgins of Lawrence was killed on January 19, 2024.

OLATHE, Kansas – The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office announced that a man has been convicted of murdering a 15-year-old girl.

Davon Washington, a 17-year-old who pleaded guilty in Killing of Brianna Higginswas sentenced to a combined sentence with enhanced juvenile prosecution (EJJP).


Washington will remain in the youth correctional facility until he is 22.5 years old and will be released on parole at age 23.

If he violates the conditions of the youth sentence, he will be sentenced to an adult sentence of 123 months.

According to court records, Washington previously pleaded guilty to one count of negligent homicide and another count of possession of a firearm as a minor.

The shooting occurred on January 19. Olathe Police identified the victim a few days after the crime than Higgins.

Ten days later, Authorities said they arrested a 17-year-old suspectnow identified as Washington.

Higgins was hospitalized with a gunshot wound from an apartment complex near W. 127th and S. Mur Len on the evening of January 19. Despite efforts to save her life, she died from the gunshots.
