Michigan men seriously injured after being found clinging to rocks on Lake Erie following boating accident

(CBS-DETROIT) – Two Michigan men were rescued Thursday night after a collision partially sank their boat on Lake Erie, officials said.

At 11:26 p.m., the Monroe County Emergency Management Center received several calls reporting that a boat had sunk near the entrance to Bolles Harbor and that there were people in the water.

When officers and firefighters arrived, they found a 62-year-old man and his 38-year-old son clinging to rocks near the Hoffman Memorial Fishing Pier and rescued them from the water.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the two men were in a 26-foot 1983 Chris-Craft boat when the boat struck the seawall near channel marker No. 10 while attempting to enter the harbor for reasons currently unknown.

“The hull of the boat was damaged and the boat partially sank into the canal,” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

The two men were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The police cited speed and alcohol as the causes of the accident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7703.
