Florida State baseball, ranked No. 8 nationally, will look to keep its national championship dreams alive on Tuesday.

The Seminoles (48-16) will play their second elimination game in the 2024 College World Series when they face No. 4 North Carolina (48-15).

First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on ESPN from Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

This will be the first meeting between the Tar Heels and the Seminoles since 2022, when UNC defeated FSU at Boshamer Stadium to close the regular season.

The winner will face undefeated Tennessee on Wednesday.

FSU was relegated to the losers bracket by Tennessee on Friday after losing their CWS opener 12-11 when the Vols scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Seminoles rebounded on Sunday with a 7-3 win over Virginia in the first elimination game of the eight-team double-elimination tournament.

UNC beat Virginia 3-2 in its CWS opener on Friday with a walk-off run-scoring single in the ninth inning. The Tar Heels suffered a 6-1 loss to Tennessee in their second game on Sunday.

FSU and UNC met once in the College World Series. The Seminoles won 4-2 in 1989, eliminating the Tar Heels.

The starters for Tuesday’s game are left-hander Andrew Armstrong (5-0, 6.98 ERA) for FSU and right-hander Aiden Haugh (4-2, 4.53 ERA) for UNC.

Armstrong has yet to make an appearance this postseason, with his last appearance coming in the ACC Tournament on May 25. Armstrong started in FSU’s 9-6 win over Wake Forest and allowed three earned runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.

Haugh’s last appearance was against LSU in the Chapel Hill Regional, when he allowed four runs in three innings

North Carolina responds against Florida State and Armstrong in the College World Series

UNC outsmarted FSU starter Andrew Armstrong with a run in the bottom of the third, cutting the Seminoles’ lead to 3-1.

With two outs, the Tar Heels scored consecutive doubles by Vance Honeycutt and Colby Wilkerson.

Armstrong freed himself from the danger zone and ended the round with a ground out to third base.

In an ESPN interview before the inning, FSU coach Link Jarrett said Armstrong was dealing with a “rib problem” that he first felt in the preseason.

Armstrong grimaced during a follow-through during his warm-up throws before the start of the second inning.

However, he remained in the game after being examined by the FSU training staff. Jarrett said he also took extra throws between innings.

Jarrett said that although the velocity of Armstrong’s fastball had dropped from the low 90s to the 80s, he still provoked only weak contact with UN batters.

“We’re going to give this thing an eye test,” Jarrett said in the interview.

“As long as he says he’s fine and can handle it.”

Armstrong has allowed four hits and one earned run in three innings. He has one strikeout, zero walks and 46 pitches, including 28 strikes.

Florida State forces UNC into the bullpen at the start of the College World Series elimination game

Florida State threw UNC starter Aiden Haugh (4-2, 4.53 ERA) out of the game after seven outs.

And forced UNC coach Scott Forbes into his bullpen.

The Seminoles extended their lead to 3-0 at the beginning of the third inning, mainly through free passes.

FSU had all the bases loaded with one out by Haugh, plus 3-2 walks for Cam Smith and James Tibbs II and a hit-by-pitch for Marco Dinges.

Forbes replaced Haugh with right-hander Matt Matthijs, one of the team’s better relievers.

However, Matthijs allowed Jamie Ferrer to walk after five pitches, forcing a run.

Matthijs was replaced by left-hander Dalton Pence (5-1, 1.91 ERA), one of the best relievers in the country.

FSU first baseman Daniel Cantu threw Pence’s first pitch to center field for an RBI sac fly and a 3-0 lead. Pence ended the inning by throwing out Alex Lodies to shortstop.

Florida State strikes first and takes an early lead against North Carolina in the College World Series

A crucial two-out single through the middle by FSU second baseman Drew Faurot gave FSU a 1-0 lead in the second inning against UNC starter Aiden Haugh (4-2, 4.53 ERA).

Faurot, whose father Adam also played for the Seminoles in the CWS (1995 and 1996), attended Florida High and transferred from Central Florida to Florida.

Jamie Ferrer, who entered the CWS with 8-for-17 and five home runs, was the first baserunner in the game when he gave Haugh a 3-2 walk with one out.

Left-hander Daniel Cantu, who had only one hit in two CWS games, hit a single down the left field line.

After Alex Lodise hit a flyout for the second out, Faurot, a switch-hitter hitting from the left side of right-handed Haugh, hit an 0-1 single back into the box to bring Ferrer home from second base.

Faurot had a batting average of .292 and 28 RBI.

FSU baseball must slow UNC’s Vance Honeycutt if it wants to advance in the College World Series

If FSU wants to beat UNC on Tuesday, it will have to keep Vance Honeycutt, the Tar Heels’ leadoff hitter, in check.

Honeycutt’s game-winning single after getting two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning helped UNC beat Virginia on Friday.

He also hit his 27th home run of the season and 64th of his career on Sunday night against Tennessee, increasing his UNC season and career record overall.

It was his ninth home run in the NCAA Tournament, also a program record. Honeycutt has also scored a UNC single-season record 86 runs this season and posted career highs in hits (78), doubles (12), RBIs (67) and total bases (175).
