41-year-old hiker dies after spending the night at the bottom of the Grand Canyon

With around a dozen deaths per year, the Grand Canyon is a land of extremes where many visitors overexert themselves. The cause of the most recent death is unclear.

A 41-year-old hiker who spent the night at the bottom of the Grand Canyon was found dead not far from his overnight location.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report shortly before 7 a.m. on Sunday that a man was unresponsive on the Bright Angel Trail, the National Park Service said. Passersby and park service employees were unsuccessful in their attempts to resuscitate him.

The man hiked out of the canyon after staying overnight at the Bright Angel Campground near the Phantom Ranch Lodge, the park service reported.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Coroner are investigating the death.

In June, temperatures at the bottom of the Grand Canyon can easily reach triple digits. Although it’s unclear how hot it was on Sunday, recent visitors have reported temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees.

Body recovered in Grand Canyon last month

The 41-year-old man is the second reported death in the Grand Canyon this year. Park rangers recovered the body of a missing 58-year-old man in the Colorado River on May 10, according to the park service.

Thomas Robison of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was believed to be traveling down the Colorado River on a wooden raft with his 11-year-old corgi dog. His car was found at the Lees Ferry site on April 21, and the search for the missing person began several days later.

The park service said an investigation was underway.

About 12 people die in the Grand Canyon every year

According to an unofficial count by Michael P. Ghiglieri and Thomas M. Myers, authors of Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon, about 12 people die in the Grand Canyon each year.

Although Ghiglieri and Myers found that the leading cause of death in the canyon is helicopter and airplane crashes, deaths due to environmental conditions such as heat have also increased in recent decades.

At least ten deaths were reported in the national park last year, including two on the Bright Angel Trail.

James Handschy, a 65-year-old from Oracle, Arizona, died in November after using a tracking device to call emergency services.

In May, a 36-year-old woman from Westfield, Indiana, died while attempting to get to the Colorado River and back in one day.
