A word from the ground

Sir Andy Murray wiped tears from his eyes as Centre Court fans and tennis legends paid an emotional tribute to his illustrious career.

In his swan year at Wimbledon, the Scot received a standing ovation after possibly his penultimate match here and an Oscar-like parade in honour of his sporting achievements.

Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal all featured in a special tribute video broadcast to millions of viewers.

And former BBC tennis presenter Sue Barker, the national treasure, returned for a special occasion to interview him on the court like in the good old days.

The result was not what he and his brother Jamie had hoped for – they lost 7:6, 6:4 to Australians Rinky Hijikata and John Peers.

But the scenes afterwards were wonderful, a wonderful opportunity for the adoring British nation to thank him for everything he had done. Memories of his first victory in 2013 came flooding back, as did his Olympic victory the year before.

Murray, a father of four, thanked his family, including his wife Kim, his mother Judy and his father Willie.

“Mom and Dad were incredibly supportive when we were little and allowed us to pursue our dreams,” he said.

“Jamie left home to train when he was 12. Then he moved to Paris. I went to Spain. I know I don’t like it when kids are away for a day.

“The fact that we were able to train abroad and pursue our dreams would not have been possible without their support. Thank you, Mom and Dad.”

“The children have been waking me and my wife up at 5 a.m. for the past eight years. They will continue to do so,” he said.

“They wanted to give me a piggyback ride the day after my back surgery. They were incredible and I’m looking forward to spending more time at home with them.

“Thank you to my team for their support. The last few years have been hard for me, but also hard for them.”

Murray leaves Centre Court and is visibly moved as he stands inside before bowing on the banister.

He enters the balcony and receives huge applause from all the fans at SW19.

He will be back on court later this week when he faces Emma Raducanu in the mixed doubles.

But tonight was the real farewell.
