Elon Musk beats Taylor Swift for X’s most popular tweet of 2024

Elon Musk beats Taylor Swift for X’s most popular tweet of 2024

Top line

A post by billionaire X owner Elon Musk poking fun at rival Meta’s servers is the most liked tweet this year, beating Cristiano Ronaldo – the world’s highest-paid athlete – and billionaire pop stars Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

Key data

Elon’s March 5 post – which read, “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working” – followed a server outage on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram after hundreds of thousands of users on both platforms reported issues.

A video of Rihanna singing GloRilla’s “TGIF” in front of rapper A$AP Rocky – with whom she has two children – received more than 1.3 million likes in less than a week, according to data from social media analytics firm NewsWhip.

Ronaldo, who posted a shirtless photo of himself for Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea tourism company, has received over 1.2 million likes since it was posted on June 3.

Another photo posted by Ronaldo on June 6, showing his family at the dinner table – apparently to celebrate the birthday of one of his children – received 1.1 million likes within two weeks.

Swift’s February announcement of the release of her latest album, “Tortured Poets Department,” received just 6,000 fewer likes than Ronaldo’s family photo and included an image of the handwritten lyrics of her song of the same name.

Forbes Rating

Musk is the richest person in the world, according to our latest estimates, with a net worth of $212 billion. Rihanna has an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion thanks to the success of her Fenty cosmetics line. Ronaldo is the highest-paid athlete in the world with total earnings of $280 million on and off the field, including a $200 million deal with Al-Nassr. Swift became a billionaire in October 2023 thanks to the success of her Eras tour and has an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion.

Surprising fact

X announced this month that it would begin hiding likes from users’ public profiles after Musk said it was “important to allow people to like posts without being attacked for it.” Despite the change, users will still be able to see how many likes they have and who has liked their posts.

Important background

Musk’s posts on X have continued to receive high engagement rates since he bought the social media platform for $44 billion in 2022. He also had the most liked post until June of last year, a meme about “people who have Twitter but never post anything.” Ronaldo and Swift also regularly have posts that exceed hundreds of thousands of likes, including several posts from Ronaldo this month with over a million likes.
