Michigan’s Fireworks Laws 2024: Your Guide to Lighting Up the Skies

Fireworks are a part of the Fourth of July, but before you light up the sky, here’s what you need to know about Michigan’s fireworks laws for 2024. Starting this week through Friday, Michiganders can legally set off fireworks on private property between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m.

State law prohibits municipalities from banning fireworks during this period, June 29 through July 4. If July 5 falls on a Friday or Sunday, the rules apply that day as well. Remember that setting off fireworks on public property, such as sidewalks, streets, schools and churches, is prohibited and can result in a fine of up to $500.

Personal fireworks, like sparklers and smoke bombs, are allowed on your property. But selling fireworks to minors? That’s illegal in Michigan.

Safety is key when it comes to fireworks. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a few tips: soak used fireworks in water before throwing them away, keep a bucket of water or hose handy, and avoid aerial fireworks in state parks or recreation areas. And remember: only set off fireworks during state-approved times. While the risk of fire is always present, the DNR points out that it is lower this year than last year.

For those who want to see a professional fireworks show, Michigan has plenty of fireworks displays scheduled in the coming days. MIFun4U is a great resource for finding events across the state. Here are some highlights:

Thursday:

  • ‘Merica Night at the Kalamazoo Zoo
  • Fireworks at the farm in Ann Arbor
  • Field of Flight air show and balloon festival in Battle Creek
  • Fireworks for Independence Day in Bellevue
  • Freedom race and fireworks in Galesburg
  • 4th of July celebrations in Lansing

Friday:

  • Independence Day fireworks in Saugatuck
  • Prestige Fireworks Extravaganza in Kalamazoo

Saturday:

  • Field of Flight air show and balloon festival in Battle Creek

This Fourth of July, follow the rules, stay safe, and enjoy the spectacular displays celebrating our country’s independence. Let’s light up the skies responsibly and keep our communities safe during the festivities.
