Chris McHugh ’09 – Head Coach Men’s Basketball – Men’s Basketball Coach

Chris McHugh ’09 begins his seventh season as head coach of the Washington and Lee men’s basketball program since taking the helm during the 2017-18 season.

Under McHugh’s leadership, seven Generals players earned 11 All-ODAC honors, one player was named ODAC Scholar-Athlete and ODAC Defensive Player of the Years three times, three players earned All-State honors, three players earned All-Region laurels and one athlete was named to the NABC Division III All-Star Game, marking the first time in program history that a General participated in that competition.

McHugh was an assistant coach at Emory University before returning to Lexington. His first year at Emory was the 2013-14 season, and he was promoted to associate coach in March 2017. During his four years with the Eagles, the team achieved an overall record of 80-31 and made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2013-14.

McHugh coached eight All-UAA players and two All-Americans during his time at Emory, and the program won at least 19 games each season. Prior to coaching the Eagles, McHugh was an assistant coach at Connecticut College during the 2012-13 season and an assistant coach at Mount Saint Mary College from 2009-12.

McHugh graduated from Washington and Lee University with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics in 2009 and received a Masters in Sports Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2012.

McHugh was a four-year standout at guard for the Generals men’s basketball program. He played in 101 games with 72 starts and was the team’s leading assist player during his junior and senior seasons. McHugh still ranks seventh on the W&L career list in three-point percentage. The Generals’ win total increased in all four years McHugh was with the team, and the team reached the ODAC championship game for the first time since 1989 during his senior season.
