Singer returns after two-year break to celebrate Pride

A singer has released a new song in honor of Pride Month after suffering homophobic abuse.

Freya Roy, 27, is originally from Halesworth in Suffolk but now lives in Norwich.

She took a two-year break from her music career to work on collaborations and produce songs for other artists.

Ms. Roy released a new song on Wednesday that she described as a “queer anthem.”

“I have been producing and collaborating for quite a long time,” Ms Roy told BBC Introducing Norfolk & Suffolk.

“I had no real plan of what was coming and then suddenly I had a bunch of songs in my hand that were ready to go, so I thought let’s go for it.

“It’s nice to have a break and a bit of distance and then go back to my own stuff that I’ve been working on on the side, but I’ve fully come back to it now.”

Their new song titled “Waiting Line” is the first of several releases planned over the next year.

Ms Roy had previously stated that she had had “some homophobic experiences that I never thought I would address in my writing”.

On social media, she said she was yelled at and applauded when she kissed her partner in public.

Afterwards, she wanted to celebrate Pride Day and performed an energetic song.

“I came through with this little beat I was working on, and it slowly evolved into me just wanting to unload all that stuff,” she continued.

“It fit in quite well with Pride month and I thought I could use it to highlight and celebrate Pride month.

“Maybe it’s something other people can relate to when they hear it.”

‘Your Community’

Ms Roy said she thought it was important to “surround yourself with people who have had similar experiences.”

“I think it’s important to find your community,” she said.

“It’s important to go to places where you’re surrounded by similar people – for example, queer communities where you feel accepted… and where there’s an unspoken exchange of information between everyone.”

“You can have self-confidence and let yourself be carried away by it to overcome even less pleasant situations.”
