Thank your personal deity – possibly the Elden Beast – it’s Friday! Even better, it’s the start of a school holiday period, which means you’re going to need a ton of cheap games to keep yourself (or your kids) occupied for hours. My continued Steam Summer Sale Picks should serve that function pretty well, plus I’m always on the lookout for discounted Amazon/Digital Store items worth snagging, so stay tuned, stay safe, save often, and see you Monday!

In Retro News I celebrate the 17th birthday of Resident Evil 4 to Wii, one of the most surprising ports I’ve ever played. While there were plenty of first-party Wii games worth admiring back then, third-party developers seemed to struggle (or lack much interest) in leveraging the unique Wiimote+Nunchuk control scheme for adult titles. Resi 4 had the obvious advantage of already being a best-in-genre monster, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t made even better by 1:1 lightgun-style shootouts. The waggle-tastic quicktime events can still go to hell, of course.

Australian birthdays for notable games.

Resident Evil 4 (Wii) 2007.

Metal Gear Solid HD Col. 2012.

Pokémon Art Academy (3DS) 2014.

With such precise targeting systems, I gave every villager an extreme ear piercing. Weird bragging, I know.

MK8 is still a great kart racing game and just as addictive as it was in 2014. This is the best entry in the series yet and has all the content you need. Returning players will especially like the revamped Battle Mode.

They look old. I get that. But you’d be crazy to underestimate Arkham Knight’s graphics (which often outshine modern Bat-titles). And in terms of gameplay and story, those three games are also far superior to Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad.

Finished Shadow of the Erdtree, or never tried a From game before? Then go back to where it all began (sort of, someway) with this brilliant remake of the original. Let yourself be seduced by the gameplay formula that has captivated – and disappointed – millions of gamers.
