Highlights

  • Chris Eubank Jr. is considered the leading contender for Canelo Alvarez’s super middleweight title.
  • Canelo Alvarez does not consider David Benavidez Jr. to be an attractive opponent and prefers a fight against Eubank Jr.
  • Eubank Jr. could secure a lucrative fight with Canelo, potentially surpassing a previous, highly anticipated fight with Gennady Golovkin.

In a surprising turn of events, British fighter Chris Eubank Jr. has emerged as the leading contender to face Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Eubank Jr. is moving closer to his chances of winning the middleweight crown (up to 168 pounds), a title that Canelo last defended in May with a dominant win over Jaime Munguia.

The Mexican star floored Munguia before securing a comfortable unanimous decision victory, marking his fourth consecutive win.

The Mexican star was heavily criticized for his choice of opponents

Canelo, 33, is currently looking for his next opponent for a potential return to the ring later this year. According to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, Eubank Jr. is the favorite to challenge Canelo, who is often considered boxing’s biggest attraction.

The former WBA title challenger has not fought since avenging his loss to fellow Briton Liam Smith in September, but is now in prime position for the lucrative fight.

Eubank Jr. has long sought a showdown with Gennady Golovkin but has been overlooked in the past, and this could be the opportunity he’s been waiting for, promising a blockbuster payday against Canelo instead after Triple G informally stepped away.

However, it would be difficult to justify giving Eubank Jr. a super middleweight title fight.

Meanwhile, fans are demanding that Canelo face David Benavidez Jr., who has 24 knockouts in his 29 consecutive victories. However, Canelo does not seem interested in this matchup and dismissed the idea in a recent interview with Fight Hub TV. He seems to have overpriced Benavidez, even though the fighter has long been a must-have for him to claim his WBC world title.

“Maybe it’s one of the biggest fights, who knows,” Canelo said. “But you know, it doesn’t make me anything, it only makes me 25 pounds on fight night. If a promoter offers $150-200 million, I’ll fight tomorrow. That’s the only reason I fight him, the only thing he makes me is 25 pounds more.”

Canelo, a fixture among the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters for nearly a decade, has lost just two of his 65 professional fights and has won world titles in four weight classes. His last loss came against Dmitry Bivol, and he has yet to seek a rematch. Eubank Jr., on the other hand, is still seeking a recognized world title, having previously held the less prestigious IBO super middleweight title.
