Famous releases double A-side single ahead of new album

I had a cliched music journalist introduction prepared for this article, which went something like this: “Ha! Imagine calling your band famous! Good luck trying to Google that, you morons!” Then I googled “famous band” and almost all of the top links were about them. So now I’m left with this rather boring story about my admin duties.

Without an entertaining hook to ease both me and you into Famous, I guess I’m left with no choice but to talk about their music. But that brings me to another dilemma. Where exactly do I begin? Because their new double A-side single doesn’t give me an easy way to talk about their sound. Why, Lord? Why is nothing easy?

So, we start with “God Hold You,” a post-hardcore track with a guitar part that sounds like a dentist’s drill slowly drilling a hole into your skull. In the best possible way. Frontman (the only consistent band member) Jack Merrett delivers deep, laid-back vocals that occasionally drown in the emptiness of the noise around them. Yet you never feel like they aren’t completely in control of the chaotic elements they invoke.

Next up is “It Goes On Forever,” a hypnotic folk song that shows a softer side. Chaos still makes its presence felt, but if there’s anything consistent about this two-track release, it’s that just the right amount is let out. If anything, “It Goes On Forever” is the tamed version of “God Hold You.”

Both tracks are from the band’s new album, “Party Album,” which is due out October 11. “The funny thing is that we had this idea to make this very authentic rock record,” says Merrett of the LP. “We kept talking about how we wanted to make a classic rock record. A stadium-ready classic rock record. But yeah, over time it just changed.”
