Brewers lose last series in Colorado 4-3

Result

The Brewers failed to mount an offensive against the Rockies’ struggling bullpen in the final period of the series in Denver, losing 4-3.

Colorado got going immediately against Tobias Myers when a single by Charlie Blackmon, a sacrifice bunt and a ground-rule double by Ryan McMahon brought in a run for a 1-0 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning that included a single by Sal Frelick before a double play by Rhys Hoskins in the second inning, the Rockies extended the lead to 3-0 with a walk, a single and a double with two RBIs by Blackmon. Jackson Chourio threw from right field to second base, allowing the second run as Colorado extended the lead early.

Myers settled down to prevent further damage in the third inning, and the Brewers answered in the fourth against Cal Quantrill. Christian Yelich, Frelick and Chourio all managed a walk to load the bases, with two outs for Andruw Monasterio. Monasterio hit a single to short center, allowing both Frelick and Chourio to score. With runners on second and third base for Eric Haase, he hit a pop out as Quantrill defended the 3-2 lead.

Myers allowed an infield single by Nolan Jones to start the fifth and advanced on a throwing error by Monasterio, but he threw the next three runs to keep the deficit at one.

The Brewers tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning when Hoskins got a walk and Chourio hit a hard double off the center field wall to right to bring it home.

Unfortunately for the Crew, Jake Cave hit his first home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead, 4-3. Chourio threw out Michael Toglia with a nice throw to second base as he tried to turn a single into a double, but Milwaukee couldn’t score any more runs and got runners on the corners in the eighth inning before Garrett Mitchell singled to end the rally. The top-seeded Brewers were down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning when Jalen Beeks got the save for the Rockies.

It wasn’t a game to write home about, as the Brewers split four games at Coors Field and lost 4-3. Milwaukee was led by Contreras and Monasterio, who each had two hits. Monasterio got two, while Chourio had the only other RBI, as Milwaukee managed just 2 of 10 runs with runners in scoring position.

Myers pitched six innings in the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk and having five strikeouts. Rob Zastryzny and Joel Payamps each threw scoreless innings as relief pitchers.

The Brewers now head to Los Angeles where they will face the Dodgers in three games starting Friday night. Aaron Civale will make his debut for the Brewers on Friday alongside Tyler Glasnow for the Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 9:10 p.m. CT.
