Six days ago, Nigerian Afrobeats singer Konstance teamed up with fellow star Majeeed to release the official music video for “My Heart.” In the short film, directed by Bushboy Films, the Lagosian lies on five different mattresses, like in the Danish fairytale “The Princess and the Pea,” next to a static lump of being. He sings to ask if he gives her peace, if he makes her smile, and generally wants to know what she’s thinking.

After pacing the bedroom on the corded phone, standing in the void with Cupid’s arrows in his body, he turns on an old desktop computer and sees her moving around there, duplicated on the screen. Next, the Lagos State University student sings about wanting to buy her husband the world if she could. In the next frame, Konstance swings from a chandelier in a red room, singing Christmas carols about how she might reward him if he takes away her pain.

For someone who entered the music business last year, the lead singer, who is just nineteen years old, already has quite the track record. She collaborated with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins on the soundtrack to The Color Purple, won a Breakthrough Talent award at last year’s Silverbird Awards, starred in Dust to Dream directed by Idris Elba alongside British music icon Seal and was a top ten finalist on Nigerian Idol!

The single “My Heart” is a taster of her upcoming debut EP “In the Beginning.” For a taste of what’s to come, check out the well-directed music video featuring Majeeed below.
