(in English: I only ask God) is a famous protest song written by the Argentine singer-songwriter Leon Gieco. It is the first song from Gieco’s 1978 album, IVLP….

…Gieco wrote it (this year) in his parents’ house in his native village of Cañada Rosquín, a small town in the north of the province of Santa Fe in Argentina… He first tried out melodies with his harmonica and guitar and then wrote personal feelings that gradually turned into phrases inspired by the harsh social events of the time, such as the Military dictatorship of his country, Mercedes Sosas Exile and the Danger of war between Chile and Argentina by the time.⁽²⁾

Gieco (questionable whether he recorded it) on his 1978 album IVLPbecause he considered it “boring and monotonous”, but finally did so on the advice of Charly García and sang it thereafter as his closing song and … on all his national and international tours.⁽³⁾

Since then, it has been interpreted by various artists both from Argentina and from around the world … and translated into more than 25 languages, including English, Portuguese, Basque, German, Quechua, Catalan, Persian, Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew …
