Killer Mike once again addresses the arrest at the Grammys in his song “Humble Me”

  • Killer Mike released a new song called “Humble Me” on Sunday, addressing his recent arrest at the Grammys
  • The Atlanta rapper spoke about the incident shortly before in his acceptance speech at the BET Awards for Album of the Year.
  • The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office recently told PEOPLE that it would not file criminal charges against the Run the Jewels artist following his arrest in February.

Killer Mike still has a lot to say about his arrest at the 2024 Grammys.

The 49-year-old Atlanta rapper released a new single called “Humble Me” on Sunday, June 30, just moments after addressing his recent brush with the law in his acceptance speech at the BET Awards for Album of the Year.

The Grammy winner used part of his two-and-a-half-minute song – and its accompanying black-and-white video – to talk more about the shocking arrest, which came just after he took home three awards in the rap categories.

“I won the Grammys for spitting out my grammar, did that for Atlanta / Did that for Atlanta, dude, got swept away like a janitor / Got put in jail, dude,” he raps in the track’s third verse. “Treat me like an animal or some kind of Hannibal, vicious and cannibalistic. The devil do it to you, right when you do it, the devil will ruin you.”

He adds: “Behind me, Satan, I walk out the door with my head held high and my hands tied proudly. Because all my heroes were handcuffed. The FBI shot some of them and they died.”

The Run the Jewels artist also rhymes about “sitting in a room full of cops like Daniel was sitting with the lions” while “just keeping his faith.”

On Sunday, February 4, Killer Mike (real name Michael Render) was arrested by authorities and escorted out of the Grammys in handcuffs after winning the awards for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance (“Scientist & Engineers”) and Best Rap Album (Michael) during the ceremony before the show aired.

At that time, video footage of the arrest was recorded by The Hollywood Reporter Writer Chris Gardner shared the incident on X, where someone could be heard saying “Free Mike.” TMZ reported that the incident occurred after an “alleged physical altercation.”

Shortly thereafter, Killer Mike released a statement to PEOPLE clarifying what happened during his arrest.

“I would like to point out that my team and I received a number of calls last night from concerned fans and colleagues wanting to know if I was OK,” he said. “As you can imagine, there was a lot going on and some confusion about which door my team and I should go through.”

He added: “We experienced an overzealous security officer, but my team and I are absolutely confident that I will ultimately be cleared of any wrongdoing.”

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office later announced on Wednesday, June 26, that it would not file criminal charges against Killer Mike.

“Mr. Render successfully completed the office’s hearing process, including the imposed requirement to perform community service,” a representative for the prosecutor’s office said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Shortly before releasing his latest single on Sunday, Killer Mike spoke about his arrest onstage at the BET Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, near where he was arrested earlier this year.

“I shouldn’t have been here,” he said. “They handcuffed me and escorted me out of the building. But I want to tell you – look to God, because I’m back, baby. I’m back and I’m alive.”

The “Down By Law” rapper continued his impassioned speech by emphasizing how important BET was in getting him on stage. “I want to tell black people that I’m back thanks to BET,” he continued. “Not because no white man calls anybody. A black man runs this business. A black company put this show together and they put my black ass back here. Thank you all.”
