Michigan State Police dog helps search for senior trapped in ravine

A Michigan State Police sniffer dog helped locate an 81-year-old woman trapped at the bottom of a ravine in Ogemaw County, the agency reported.

It is unclear when the Richland Township resident was found, according to a July 3 news release from the Michigan State Police Third District. Additional information was not available Thursday.

Officers were dispatched to the elderly woman’s residence after a relative reported last seeing her the previous evening around 10 p.m. Officers found the missing person’s coat, purse and cell phone in her garage. This prompted officers to call in Loki, a member of the state police canine team.

“Upon arrival, Loki began following the trail through the woods behind the house and discovered a pair of gloves and a walking stick leading into a steep ravine,” the state police statement said. “Shortly thereafter, Loki spotted the elderly woman at the bottom of the ravine, unable to move.”

According to state police, troopers were assisted by Ogemaw County EMS and Richland Township Fire Departments in carrying the woman out of the woods “as a heavy rainstorm was approaching.”

“After speaking with the woman, it turned out that she had disappeared into the woods for over 20 hours before she was found,” state police said.
