Canelo Alvarez in talks for surprise fight against Chris Eubank Jr. as British star emerges as new ‘favourite’ for undisputed super middleweight date

Chris Eubank Jr. has surprisingly emerged as the favorite for the fight against Canelo Alvarez – the British boxer has his chances against the undisputed king of the super middleweight division increasingly under control.

Canelo last defended his bar-weight title in dominant fashion against Jaime Munguia in May, knocking his fellow Mexican to the ground before earning a comfortable unanimous decision victory.

After his fourth consecutive win, the 33-year-old is now looking for his next opponent as he eyes a return to the ring later this year.

And according to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, Eubank Jr. is the new favorite to next challenge boxing’s biggest cash cow.

The former WBA title challenger – who has not fought since avenging his loss to fellow Briton Liam Smith in September – is now believed to be in pole position after being listed as a potential opponent.

He has long demanded a fight with Canelo, but in recent years he has been denied a chance at the world champion in four weight classes.

But two months before his 35th birthday, Eubank Jr. could finally experience the huge payday he has longed for.

Fans have been calling for Canelo to face another Mexican compatriot, the feared David Benavidez Jr., for some time now, but he seems to have little interest in this revenge match with his fellow countryman.

He recently told Fight Hub TV of Benavidez, who won 24 of his 29 consecutive victories by knockout: “Maybe it’s one of the biggest fights, who knows. But you know, he’s not making me anything, he’s only bringing 25 pounds on fight night.”

“But I think if any promoter, not him because he’s not in a position to offer me money then I’m the one, but if a promoter I work with offers $150-200 million then I’ll fight tomorrow. That’s the only reason I’m fighting him, the only thing he brings to the table is 25 pounds more.

Eubank has not fought since avenging his loss to fellow Briton Liam Smith in September.

“No pressure to fight. I don’t have to fight anyone and I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, because I remember when that happened with Golovkin. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone.”

Canelo has been considered one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in boxing for nearly a decade, losing only two of his 65 professional fights and winning world titles in four different weight classes.

Eubank, on the other hand, still does not have a recognized world title in his hands, having previously won the lesser-known IBO super middleweight title.
