LAKE WAWASEE – At the end of the first day of the five-week junior sailing program at the Wawasee Yacht Club, the young sailors headed to the clubhouse to the long, horseshoe-shaped tables to discuss the day’s sailing experience on Lake Wawasee.

The 20-plus students, dressed in bathing suits, life jackets, and various hats and Crocs shoes (with tags), took their seats in front of two lines (ropes) that they would later use to practice tying a figure-eight knot. Lead instructor Andrew Wallach and his five young assistant instructors reflected on the positive aspects of the day and the aspects of sailing that should be worked on today for next time. Wallach pointed to a stroller set up on the porch to explain various concepts of sailing. He emphasized that if sailors feel they are having difficulty with any aspect of sailing, they should call an instructor. “That’s what we’re here for. We want each of you to be safe,” Wallach said.

Basic Sailing is offered to all sailors ages 8-13. Sailors are divided into groups based on size, experience and ability. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of sailing such as boat handling and wind awareness. Optimist, O’Pen Bics and Sunfish boats are used. The Advanced program is recommended for experienced sailors ages 13-15. Emphasis is placed on practicing advanced boat handling techniques, racing skills and teamwork aboard multi-crew boats. Sailors are encouraged to work aboard Lightnings or E Scows and/or race Sunfish on club race weekends.

“The most important thing for beginners is to keep their boat up, keep the mainsheet and tiller under control and sail perpendicular to the wind. The more advanced sailors have to turn to the windward mark and sail back to me,” said Wallach.

The junior trainers currently working at the club are Grant Garner, Rory Nelson, Graydon Holt, Jack Winter, Anna Winter, Audrey Wallach, Mia and Wynn Wellington.

Friendship plays a big role in sailing. “The kids love seeing their friends from the previous year. Our sailors come from all over the country,” said Wallach.
