Lucky Daye talks about his love for Bruno Mars and says: “He is the reason why I started studying Motown”

Key Highlights

  • Lucky Daye’s third album, Algorithm, features a collaboration with Bruno Mars

  • The track Mary by Algorithm is a tribute to DMX and Sisqó

Luck Daye praised Bruno Mars for his songwriting ability. He idolized Mars for many years and it was like a dream come true when they finally worked together on Daye’s latest album.

A dream becomes true

Daye’s third studio album, Algorithm, was released on June 28, and features Mars on the song That’s You. Daye, 38, shared his excitement with Variety and praised Mars for inspiring him. “Bruno is a genius,” says Lucky Daye. He has admired Mars since BoB’s song Nothin’ on You. In his own work, he has acknowledged influences from studying Mars’ Motown music.

For Daye, working on “That’s You” was very special. He said, “It was like a dream for me to be able to work with him because I always imagined it.” On this particular song idea, Mars actually sounded like Daye, and Daye found that very sweet. When he wrote the lyrics, Mars himself sang the melody and added it, hoping that it would make the song sound great.

Appreciating influences

Daye has written songs for famous people such as Beyoncé and Usher, and with That’s You he wanted to pay tribute to the work of Bruno Mars. However, there are other inspirations in Algorithm as well.

One of these is demonstrated in Daye’s track “Mary,” which pays tribute to DMX and Sisqó’s 1999 hit “What These Bitches Want.” Daye loves to develop concepts around songs, and “Mary” was born out of his admiration for DMX.

Notable collaborations

Other artists featured on Algorithm include British musician Raye and singer Teddy Swims. Fans of Daye’s 2022 Grammy-nominated album Candydrip will notice that this album follows quickly behind. While a lot has been happening with Daye, things have been quiet with Mars.

Following his album 24K Magic in 2016, Mars formed Silk Sonic with Anderson Paak. Their debut album is titled An Evening with Silk Sonic and features the Grammy-winning single Leave the Door Open.

The collaboration between Lucky Daye and Bruno Mars, on the other hand, symbolizes an important moment in his musical career and underlines the artists’ mutual respect and their mutual love for music.
