Mason Taylor of the LSU football team is chosen as the second best tight end by Phil Steele

LSU lost its two best pass catchers from last year, with Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. moving on to the NFL. There is still talent in the receiver room, but the Tigers will look elsewhere in the passing game.

Mason Taylor enters his junior season with the team and is expected to be one of the best tight ends in the country. He made a name for himself as a true freshman, catching the game-winning two-point conversion to beat Alabama, and although his productivity dropped off a bit as a sophomore, he still totaled 348 yards and a touchdown on 36 catches.

He could take on an even bigger role this season, and Phil Steele praises Taylor in his annual college football preview, ranking Taylor No. 2 in the nation’s tight ends.

Taylor was expected to make a big jump forward after his great season as a freshman. While that didn’t really happen, it can largely be attributed to players going elsewhere. In an offense that could lean even more on the passing game with a gunslinger like Garrett Nussmeier, Taylor could benefit.
