The Atlanta rapper released “Humble Me” and its accompanying music video hours after winning Album of the Year at this year’s BET Awards for his sixth studio album, “Michael.” The striking black-and-white video shows Mike rapping into the camera as police gradually remove his jewelry and handcuff him.

In his lyrics, he drew parallels between his recent arrest and the experiences of civil rights activists as well as the biblical story of Daniel in the lions’ den.

Reflecting on the February 4 incident, he rapped: “I won the Grammys for spitting out my grammar / That’s what I did for Atlanta, dude / Got swept away like a janitor / Got sent to jail / Treated me like an animal or some kind of Hannibal / Vicious and cannibalistic.”

He continued: “I walked out the door in handcuffs with my head held high and proud / ‘Cause all my heroes were in handcuffs / The FBI shot some of them and they died.”

Mike’s son Mikael “Pony Boy” Render also made a cameo appearance, while his father rapped: “So I went to sleep as relaxed as possible / and the next day my son got a kidney” – and confirmed that his son had received a life-saving kidney transplant the day after the Grammys.

Earlier this year, Mike was arrested by Los Angeles police after getting into an altercation with a security guard before the Grammy Awards broadcast. Although he was initially charged with assault, prosecutors later decided not to press charges. Instead, the Run The Jewels star performed community service.

When Mike accepted his BET Award this week, he also spoke about the incident that made headlines: “I technically shouldn’t have been here. I was handcuffed and escorted out of the building, but I want to tell you: Look to God, because I’m back, baby. I’m back and I’m winning.”

“I want to tell black people that I’m back thanks to BET,” he added. “Not because no white person is calling anybody. A black person runs this business, a black company put on this show and they put my black ass back here. Thank you all.”

Mike also urged viewers to vote in the upcoming US presidential election in November, which will elect either current US President Joe Biden or controversial 45th President Donald Trump for a second term.

“Who we elect on the big stage is important, but what’s more important is that you know who your city council is, who your district attorney is,” he said. “And if you don’t like the candidates, then run your black ass to the polls and run for office yourself.”

Accordingly Billboard‘Humble Me’ will appear on Mike’s upcoming seventh album. The record will be released later this summer via Loma Vista Recording, but Mike has not yet announced a name or release date for the project.

Killer Mike is currently on the North American leg of his ‘Down By Law Tour’. The rapper, who is backed by choir Mighty Midnight Revival, will also be stopping at major US festivals such as Lollapalooza before touring the UK and Europe in the autumn. All available US tickets can be found here and tickets for the UK and EU shows can be found here.
