Jeremy Fears Jr. of Michigan State was able to improve “mentally” last season

Michigan State University basketball point guard Jeremy Fears Jr.’s highly anticipated freshman season unfortunately ended prematurely when he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in December.

Although it was a significant setback for Fears and his team, the former four-star recruit made the most of his time on the bench.

Following his 19-point performance at the 2024 Moneyball Pro-Am last Thursday, Fears told reporters that his game has evolved “mentally” over the course of the 2023 season.

“I’ve done a lot of watching, just being able to watch, visualize things mentally,” he said, “but also physically I’ve grown a lot and got to work with Coach (Dr. Lorenzo) Guess, got to shoot, got to practice, got to do everything and watch and see the good and the bad, some things you should do and some things you shouldn’t. So it’s really a learning experience in itself.”

Now that Fears has fully recovered, he can focus on the field again. He has the whole summer ahead of him to do so.

“(I) really want to get better at everything,” Fears said. “And I really want to make sure I’m leading the charge, doing everything right and just trying to be the best person I can be.”

Fears played just 12 games for the Spartans in his freshman season, averaging 3.5 points per game, 3.3 assists and 0.8 steals. He played an average of 15.3 minutes per game.

Fears was recently issued a redshirt for last season for medical reasons, so he is now eligible to play for another year.

As a recruit, Fears was the top-ranked recruit in the state of Illinois in 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, the seventh-best point guard in his class, and the 31st-best recruit in the nation.

Fears was unable to complete his first season with the Spartans, but expanding his knowledge of the game could make him even better for his second season. With so much turnover in the program, Fears is expected to lead the freshmen.

Spartan fans will be excited to see what lies ahead for young Fears, whose college career is just beginning.
