Amazon Kindles cannot download books due to outage

An ongoing outage is preventing Amazon Kindle users from downloading new and previously purchased books to their e-readers. According to moderators responding to users reporting the issue on Amazon’s support forums, the company is aware of the problem and is “currently working to resolve it.” Other troubleshooting steps, such as resetting the device, have not resolved the issues, so users may have to wait it out for now.

Good e-reader reported the problem on Wednesday and noted a response from Amazon support that said it was due to “server issues” and “it would take at least 48 hours for e-book downloads to begin again, but it could take longer.”

The edge has asked Amazon for more details and we will update this post when we have more details.

On Reddit, users are reporting similar issues with their Kindles, and there are multiple reports on Amazon’s support forums that Kindles can only download the title and cover of books before the progress bar gets stuck at 1 percent. The outage also appears to affect books that users are trying to download from Overdrive to their Kindle devices using Libby. However, downloading books to the Amazon Kindle apps for iOS and Android is not affected.

This latest issue comes a week after several Kindle users on Reddit reported an issue with Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” feature, which allows e-books and documents to be loaded onto the e-readers without having to connect them to a computer. Some users received error messages telling them their files “could not be delivered due to a service error,” while other users in the thread earlier this week were still experiencing issues with the service.
