Zach Bryan channels his inner cult classic from 2001 with his new song “American Nights”

Is Zach Bryan a fan of the cult comedy classics?

Just by analyzing his latest album, The great American bar sceneI have to go out on a limb and say the answer to that question is yes. The 19-song project has many standout tracks, like the single released ahead of the album “Pink Sky”, or the Collaboration with the outrageously underrated John Mayer.

But if you’re like me, one of the song titles, or at least the lyrics in the chorus, struck a familiar chord. “American Nights” paints a vivid picture of the summer season and is one of the more uptempo songs on the new project. To be honest, it’s one of my favorites from The great American bar sceneand that may be because it reminds me of one of my absolute favorite movies.

Wet hot American summer.

The low-budget film was released in 2001 and was packed with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars – Before They were the biggest stars in Hollywood. The wacky, irreverent summer camp movie starred Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, and countless other talented actors and actresses. It wasn’t exactly a box office smash when it came out, but over the years the film grew in popularity (and even spawned two spin-off series on Netflix).

Therefore, I find it hard to believe that the comedy Wet hot American summer and Zach Bryan’s “American Nights” somehow don’t fit together. Especially because the chorus of the song is almost direct repeats the title of the film, with the only difference being that Bryan replaces “summer” with “nights,” as you can see in the following lyrics:

“Damp, hot, American nights
Shake your body dry in the coastal light
Wet, hot, American nights
We sneaked our Fords to the shore and drank a bottle of bone-dry
We smuggled our Fords to the shore and drank a bottle bone-dry.”

Of course, this sounds like “shaking your body dry” and “sneaking to the shore and drinking bone-empty bottles” are things that irresponsible counselors at a summer camp would do… but maybe I’m just exaggerating? Then again, before the official release, people thought the song would be called “Wet Hot American Nights,” but when the song was officially added to the project, the title was simply shortened to “American Nights.”

Could this have been done intentionally so that it would not be too tight with Wet hot American summer?

I just hope the superstar sees this and admits how much he loves the 2001 film and that it served as inspiration for American Nights. It would be really great if the somewhat obscure comedy played a role in Zach’s songwriting.

And to be honest, Zach’s song would be much better than the original music composed for the film. They could easily put “American Nights” in place of “Wet Hot American Dream,” which you can listen to below:

If we’re going to choose favorites, I definitely prefer Zach Bryan’s song…

And I hope that the people reading this have seen Wet hot American summer and thought the same thing as me when they heard this new song from Zach Bryan. If you haven’t seen it yet, get it ASAP (it’s a great sight this time of year).
