Michigan deputy unharmed after firework hits chest and explodes seconds later, officials say

(CBS-DETROIT) – A sheriff’s office in the US state of Michigan is reminding people of the dangers of handling fireworks after a deputy was hit in the chest by a firework on Wednesday.

Shortly after midnight, Ingham County officials were called to the 5000 block of Hemlock Drive in Delhi Township after receiving a report of juveniles setting off fireworks in a backyard.

When the officers arrived, they noticed a large crowd of people in front of the house, which appeared to be a party.

As they approached the house, a vehicle carrying several boys drove away at high speed and “fired a firework projectile” at them.

According to the sheriff’s office, the firework hit one of the officers and bounced off his chest before exploding seconds later.

Neither the officer who was hit nor the other officers or party guests were injured.

“We are sharing this unfortunate and reckless incident to remind the community of the responsibility and dangers associated with fireworks of all kinds. Anything that burns, sparks and explodes carries risks,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please take extra time to educate youth and pay close attention to the who, how, where and when when handling fireworks.”

Authorities also urge citizens to be careful when setting off fireworks and to use them only at appropriate times.

In Delhi Township, the use of fireworks on private property is permitted from June 29 to July 5. However, residents must stop using fireworks by 11:45 p.m. on these days.
