Good news for Michigan State and Jonathan Smith, bad news for archrival Wolverines, S

Michigan State’s biggest rival had the pleasure of celebrating a college football national championship this offseason – a feeling every team strives for.

How the 2024 season will turn out for the reigning national champions is anyone’s guess, however, as the Wolverines, starting with their head coach Sherrone Moore, will be a completely different team.

Moore, who served as the team’s interim coach for the final three games of the regular season last year while former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh served his suspension for the program’s sign-stealing scandal, replaced Harbaugh in the offseason after the longtime coach returned to the NFL to coach the Los Angeles Chargers.

Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports recently ranked all of the Big Ten head coaches. Moore came in at number 15.

“Moore is ranked so low only because he doesn’t have enough overall experience as a head coach,” Fornelli wrote. “However, he already has wins over Ohio State and Penn State on his resume, and there aren’t many coaches ranked above him who can say the same! This is a fascinating situation for Moore because on one hand, it won’t be easy to step out of Jim Harbaugh’s considerable shadow, and on the other, he’s taking over a team that won a national title. Sure, some key players are gone, but many key players are back, too. Oh, and everyone seems to be writing off the Wolverines. We’ve never seen a team that tries to disrespect, have we?!”

Jonathan Smith of Michigan State, meanwhile, finished in 7th place.

“(S)mith’s 34-35 overall record with Oregon State may not blow you away, but the Beavers have gone 25-13 the past three years and produced plenty of NFL talent in that time,” Fornelli wrote. “Now Smith gets a chance at Michigan State, a school with deeper pockets than those available in Corvallis, Ore. Smith has an innovative mind and is a smart playmaker. He’s also an excellent quarterback developer, a combination that has long proven valuable in a football coach. The Spartans haven’t drafted a quarterback since Connor Cook in 2016, and he’s the only one taken since Kirk Cousins in 2012. I guarantee you we’ll see much better quarterback development under Smith than Michigan State has had in the last decade.”
