Will Michigan State reach a bowl game in Coach Jonathan Smith’s first season?

Coach Jonathan Smith and his coaching staff have focused on improving the roster this offseason, and after spending the first part of the offseason getting their bearings, they have responded well to the challenges they faced in their first offseason in East Lansing.

The only thing that seems to be more difficult for Coach Smith and his coaching staff in the offseason is their schedule for the upcoming season, as they have to play Ohio State, Oregon, Iowa and Michigan within five weeks.

This schedule would be difficult for any team in the country, but it will undoubtedly be difficult for Coach Smith’s Spartans, who are currently rebuilding their team. However, Coach Smith and his coaching staff have already overcome some difficulties.

Coach Smith was able to replace nearly 20 scholarship players who all entered the transfer portal at the same time. Coach Smith and his coaching staff were able to secure one of the better new transfer portal classes this offseason, giving the Spartans a chance to be competitive next season.

Some believe Michigan State is in for a long season because they lack talent compared to other teams in the Big Ten and across the country. However, not everyone thinks the upcoming season will be disappointing. One writer believes Michigan State has a chance to reach a bowl game in its first season under Coach Smith.

Bill Bender of Sporting News believes Michigan State will surprise a lot of people. Bender recently released an initial set of bowl predictions for the upcoming season. His list of bowl predictions included Michigan State. Bender predicts Michigan State will make it to the Detroit Bowl, formerly the Quick Lane Bowl. Bender believes Michigan State will face the Ohio Bobcats of the Mid-American Conference.

A bowl appearance this season would be Michigan State’s first since beating Pitt in the 2021 Peach Bowl. A bowl game in its first season would be a significant win for Coach Smith and his coaching staff and would likely boost recruiting efforts and their chances with talented players entering the transfer portal. Michigan State has a challenging schedule, but their schedule also makes a six-win season a realistic possibility.
