Husband surprises wife with renewed wedding vows on famous Soo Locks boat tour

“Oh, I just thought, what has he done now? He always surprises me. I didn’t know anything,” said Janice Calcaterra

Louis and Janice Calcaterra were married 25 years ago in a small chapel in Roseville, Michigan.

25 years later, Louis surprised Janice by renewing their wedding vows on the Famous Soo Locks Boat Tour on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.

She had no idea what was about to happen until Scott Labonte, owner and captain of the Famous Soo Locks Boat Tour, picked up the radio microphone and called the two to the bow of the LeVoyager tour boat as it passed through the MacArthur Locks.

In addition to all his other duties, Labonte is also an ordained minister.

“Oh, I just thought, what has he done now? He always surprises me. I didn’t know anything,” she said.

Louis called Labonte a few months ago to ask if and how he could help with his idea.

“I gave him a few ideas. He wasn’t sure what he wanted. Finally, we talked about reading the vows. He was all for it, except for one thing. It should be a surprise,” Labonte said.

A few years ago, Louis and Janice went on a boat trip with their children and he came up with the idea of doing something special to renew their vows on their 25th anniversary.

They currently live in St. Clair Shores and have a home in Mio, MI that they visit often.

They will now spend the next few days traveling through central and western UP for their second honeymoon.
