The fun-free club of Cub Tracks

WELCOME to today’s episode of Cub Tracks News and Notes™a greatest hits collection of Chicago style Beat writers and bloggers, floor from #Boys#MiLBAnd #MLB Baseball, overheated, permeated by Tears of the writersand then cold brewed overnight for maximum flavor. No artificial intelligence was used, employed, enchanted or embalmed in the creation of this manuscript (apparently I am some train although). Cub tracks eagerly awaits the introduction of robot referees and have already changed the three laws. It is strange. Cub tracks I became a professional a long time ago.

Cub tracks. Where the big ones run away.

That attitude just sticks in my Gulliver, Droogies. Even if it’s true. I’m not necessarily looking for a silver lining, but maybe a grey lining, something that’s neither black nor white. Sometimes hard to find and fleeting. Like clockwork, the curtain falls.

Man, Brennen Davis. I feel for The Dude. What a shame. So promising. I don’t know where he goes from here. This is how the days of our lives go by. On the other hand, it looks like Matt Shaw has been promoted to Triple-A (H/T to Cubbies Crib).

Shota Imanaga started and did well. He did allow a two-run jack to Trea Turner, who has been playing well lately, but allowed three earned runs with his performances. He left the game with the game tied. Tyson Miller didn’t do his part this time and scored two runs on his watch. That was pretty much all she wrote as the offense went back to sleep.

  • Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Tribune* {$}): With the Chicago Cubs losing yet another series opener, this time to MLB’s best Philadelphia Phillies, the outlook remains bleak. “Two days into July, with their season winding down, the Chicago Cubs were once again looking for positives.”
  • Michael Cerami (Bleacher Nation*): I’m going through the roster one by one to find tradeable Cubs players. The Cubs simply have no choice but to start planning to sell at the 2024 MLB transfer deadline. Ryan O’Rourke is also in a trading mood. Mike McGraw* {$} says it’s a tough sell.
  • Evan Altman (Cubs Insider*): The Cubs continue to be cornered by the Phillies team and offer an alternative view on roster construction. “…let’s take a look at the value concept associated with the huge contracts that Jed Hoyer likes to avoid.
  • Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Tribune* {$}): The Chicago Cubs could see a boost from the impending return of several pitchers. “It’s a significant group that we’ve been counting on for important innings,” manager Craig Counsell said.
  • Andy Martinez (Marquee Sports Network*): The Cubs get bad news about reliever Yency Almonte. “So he’s just thinking about what to do here,” Counsell said. “He’s going to have to get stronger or consider surgery.”
  • Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Tribune* {$}): After a slow start, the Chicago Cubs have become one of the most efficient base-stealing teams in the MLB. “We don’t have a lot of guys who are crazy fast, but we also don’t have a lot of guys who limit us on the bases,” Nico Hoerner told the Tribune.
  • Andy Martinez (Marquee Sports Network*): Three Cubs prospects have been selected to participate in the All-Star festivities. “Outfielders Owen Caissie (Triple-A Iowa) and Matt Shaw (Double-A Tennessee) will participate in the Futures Game this year during All-Star Week festivities in Texas later this month. In addition, Moisés Ballesteros (Triple-A Iowa) will participate in the inaugural Futures Skills Showcase.” More from Jake Misener.
  • Tommy Birch (Des Moines Register* {$}): Brennen Davis, the former Chicago Cubs star prospect, suffers a fractured vertebra. “…Davis’ rise to the major leagues was halted by injury … again.”
