“The Umbrella Academy” spin-off series “The Sparrow Academy” no longer in production at Netflix

The Umbrella Academy The fourth and final season on Netflix will air in August 2024. This will be the end of the series, and the long-rumored spin-off series will reportedly no longer continue.

First introduced in season 3 of the series, the Sparrows are a rival group of the Umbrella Academy that emerged after a change in the timeline.

The group consisted of Marcus Hargreeves (played by Justin Cornwell), Ben (Justin H. Min), Fei (Britne Oldford), Alphonso (Jake Epstein), Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), Jayme (Cazzie David) and Christopher.

Following its launch, the creative team behind The Umbrella Academy began developing a spin-off series.

The synopsis for the spin-off was as follows:

“An offshoot of the Umbrella Academy after the Sparrow Academy, an academy with seven children born on the same day who were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves after the timeline was altered by their counterparts, the Umbrella Academy. The Sparrow Academy is almost identical to the Umbrella Academy, but with a group of children that Hargreeves considers better.”

We last heard about the project in early 2023, but we haven’t heard anything in the last year. Netflix told us in May 2023 that The Sparrow Academy was a spin-off in development, but was not currently close to release. At the time, it added that projects are always evolving.

The news that the spin-off is no longer moving forward comes via Rolling Stone (confirmed by a spokesperson) in an exposé about the showrunner of The Umbrella AcademySteve Blackman. The report claims the showrunner created “a hostile work environment” while working on the flagship show, although he denies any wrongdoing.

Of course another great Netflix series, Shadows and Boneshad a spin-off series in development at Netflix called Six of the crows, Although this one also never got the green light and was cancelled last year.

Two more shows with Steve Blackman are reportedly in trouble at the streamer. We refer to Orbita limited space science fiction series, and Horizon Zero Dawna series based on the popular PlayStation franchise. There is currently conflicting information about what happened to them. Rolling Stone’s report was updated to say that Blackman was no longer attached to them, but a post by the author on X suggests they were both put on hold altogether. We’ve reached out to Netflix for clarification, but don’t expect a quick response given the holidays.
