Former Romanian Prime Minister calls for action amid growing concerns over declining waters in the Caspian Sea

In recent years, the falling water levels of the Caspian Sea have caused great concern and given rise to various theories, as well as the urgent need for solutions and regulatory measures.

Former Romanian Prime Minister Petre Roman addressed these concerns during the panel discussions on “The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation” at the 29th High-Level Meeting, which focused on “The Road to COP29: Sustainable and Resilient Futures”.

Roman stressed that tectonic activities on the seabed of the Caspian Sea are contributing to these changes in water levels. In addition, a reduction in the flow of the Volga River is observed, which is crucial for the Caspian Sea ecosystem.

“The water level of bodies of water all over the world is falling, and the Caspian Sea is no exception,” he noted.

Roman attributed this trend to reduced river inflows and the effects of global warming, stressing that fluctuations in closed basins have far-reaching consequences and that conditions in some lakes are even harsher.

Although the Volga River traditionally helps stabilize the water level of the Caspian Sea, its level has been falling in recent years. Roman expressed optimism that COP29 will raise awareness and spark solutions to these critical environmental problems.
