Supacellthe new sci-fi drama about a group of black south Londoners suddenly developing superpowers is getting great reviews. It currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning it has a good chance of being included in your roundup of the best Netflix shows.
Leila Latif writes in The Guardian: “This is not your typical superhero origin story, which is all about truth, justice and the American way. Instead, the characters operate in a society where opportunities are few and far between, and everyone is struggling to make ends meet and avoid violence.” It is “an absolute smash, impressively directed and refreshingly staged, with a sensational soundtrack.”
The show has been compared to Channel 4’s irreverent action comedy outsiderwhich is unfortunately not available on Netflix, but readers in the US with a subscription to Hulu or Peacock can watch it (in the UK it streams on Channel 4, in Australia it can be seen on Stan). But Netflix has plenty more stunning sci-fi series for you to enjoy.

In the far future, the few surviving humans discover how to send their consciousnesses into the past and into the brains of people in the 21st century. These travelers are working in secret to prevent a terrible future, and although the series is off to a pretty slow start, it has completely hooked people. I can’t tell you much more about the premise as I don’t want to spoil any surprises, but the show’s three seasons are consistently entertaining without getting bogged down in time travel cliches. It’s a shame there are only three seasons: Netflix canceled the series after the third.

How Supacellthis animated science fiction series currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100%. Originally produced for Max and then saved from cancellation by Netflix, Scavengers rule is an eco-horror film set on a dangerous planet where the crew of a damaged space freighter is stranded. The New Yorker calls the film “a triumph of the imagination that uses animation to bring miraculously unknown flora and fauna to life.” According to Slant magazine, “So many alien worlds in similar films and shows seem dishearteningly limited in their imagination.” Scavengers rule“But it’s brimming with inventions that only animation can bring to life. It has no illusions that its unique world is the real star, and what a star it is.”

Although not exclusive to Netflix, the streamer is offering the first two seasons of SyFy’s entertaining fish-out-of-water sci-fi series. When an alien crashes on Earth, he does what any self-respecting alien would do and immediately poses as the local doctor while planning to murder everyone. But his diabolical plans encounter a tremendous obstacle in the form of a nine-year-old boy who can see through his disguise. According to the LA Times, it’s “an entertaining trip to Spielberg-land, where aliens live among us.” It’s reminiscent of classic comedies like My favorite Martian and films including The man who fell from the sky and delivers plenty of warmth and good-humored gags. The Los Angeles Times says there is more than just a hint of Northern Ireland of all places in addition.
