Singaporean singer Aliff Aziz and Malaysian actress Ruhainies face charges of intimacy

On Wednesday, 33-year-old Singaporean singer and actor Aliff Aziz and 31-year-old Malaysian actress Ruhainies pleaded not guilty to charges of being in close proximity. The two were subsequently arrested by officials from the Federal Territories’ Islamic Religion (Jawi) Department at a residential complex in Kuala Lumpur on March 9.

Aliff and Ruhainies were charged under Section 27(a) and Section 27(b) of the Sharia Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997, respectively, which, if convicted, carries a fine of not more than 3,000 ringgit (US$637) or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

Speaking to media representatives outside the Federal Territory Supreme Sharia Court in Kuala Lumpur, Aliff and Ruhainies asked the public to pray for the smooth running of the trial.

The two also answered questions from reporters and clarified that they arrived at the court separately and were not engaged, contrary to reports by certain media outlets.

Aliff said he had rested “mentally, emotionally and physically.”

“I am also a normal person, even if I have made mistakes. So I am using this time to rest and spend time with my family… and strengthen my family ties.”

When asked about her opinion on Aliff’s ex-wife Bella Astillah, who “congratulated” her on “successfully destroying (Bella’s) marriage,” Ruhanies replied: “Since today’s (intimacy) case is a different topic, I do not want to address (Bella’s) case.”

The trial will continue in October and the bail for Aliff and Ruhainies has also been extended.
