Why Draymond Green was “sad” but also excited about Chris Paul’s move to the Spurs – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

While Draymond Green is sad about Chris Paul’s departure from the Warriors, he is happy about his friend’s new job with the San Antonio Spurs.

In a recent episode of “The Draymond Green Show,” the Golden State veteran expressed his disappointment that Paul and the Warriors parted ways, but also his excitement that the Point God is teaming up with Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama.

“Another one that makes me very sad is CP (Chris Paul),” Green said. “I don’t know if it’s been documented how much we hated each other, but I’m very sad to see him leave this team. Because in my head I’m thinking, ‘Man, to see CP finish his career here, that would be awesome,’ and that’s another part of the business that sucks.

“One year with CP and I’m like, ‘Man, I really love this guy, he’s incredible, one of the best teammates I’ve ever had,’ and then he’s gone, and that’s the weird thing about this deal, but it really made me sad. So, between the day I found out Klay (Thompson) and CP (are leaving), I’ve been sad the last couple days trying to process my thoughts.

“Still, CP, Pop (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) is still a genius. He put CP with Wemby to show the young guy the way. CP is one of the best veterans I’ve ever known and this is going to be great.”

After Golden State failed to negotiate a suitable trade, the team waived Paul and freed him to sign a one-year, $11 million deal with the Spurs. Pairing Paul with NBA Rookie of the Year Wembanyama will give San Antonio a strong alley-oop threat on every possession and add veteran stability to the young Spurs team.

Many expect Wembanyama to be the next dominant big man in the NBA, so Green is no doubt excited to see his friend alongside such a dynamic young player.

Still, it must hurt for Green that Paul and Thompson left Golden State as free agents, leaving the Warriors with many questions about their roster for the rest of the offseason.
