Wednesday: Netflix series undergoes record-breaking change for season 2

The second season of Wednesday is already breaking records thanks to a huge change in direction.

Production of the next episodes is in full swing and Jenna Ortega returns to the role of the titular Addams Family character after surprisingly leaving another Netflix project.

The majority of the cast is also returning, with the exception of one main actor who has since announced his absence from the cast list for season 2. This revelation followed an obstacle the series faced when one of the show’s original stars dropped out before finishing filming his scenes.

Another striking difference in this season is the filming location: While the first season was shot in Romania, production is rumored to have moved to County Wicklow, Ireland.

This has now been confirmed when Screen Ireland announced that not only the highly successful Wednesday Although it is being filmed there, when you consider the costs, it is the “largest production ever filmed in Ireland”.

The reason for the change is said to be logistical challenges.

To mark the filming record, Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Simon Harris visited the set, where he met with the series’ creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, as well as series director Tim Burton, who is preparing to release his Beetlejuice sequel later this year.

Harris said: “I am delighted that Ireland continues to be chosen as a filming location for series and films, supporting our economy, creating jobs, showcasing our creative talent and putting our country on the world stage.

Anna Mallett, BP Production EMEA at Netflix, described Wednesday as a “cultural juggernaut” and added: “Over the last few years we have invested significantly in productions made in Ireland, such as The Siege of Jadotville, The wonder, awl And Vikings: Valhalla.”

After just one week of release Wednesday was streamed for a total of 341.2 million hours, surpassing the record set by Stranger Things.

In an article about the success of the show, The Independent said that despite Ortega’s strong lead role, “the film cannot shake off certain characteristics, namely the fact that it is essentially the Addams Family of Generation Z, “Riverdale”.

Wednesday Season two is expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025.
