Josh Brolin’s series Outer Range is canceled by Amazon Prime Video after two seasons

It’s the end of “Outer Range” on Amazon Prime Video.

The series starring Josh Brolin, which mixed the classic western with a sci-fi mystery, was canceled by the streaming giant less than two months after the release of the second season, as reported The Hollywood Reporter On Wednesday.

After the news broke, Brolin expressed his sadness over Amazon’s decision on Instagram and then thanked the show’s “extremely loyal fans.”

“As much as I find it a faux pas that Amazon Prime is canceling our beloved show ‘Outer Range,’ it will never diminish or detract from the greatness of this idea, this all-star cast and the hardest-working crew I have ever encountered,” Brolin began, attaching a photo from the set of ‘Outer Range.’

He then nodded respectfully to Charles Murray, who took over the role of showrunner of the series after the first season.

“In terms of creative integrity, 2-0. We win. Thank you, Charles Murray, especially for being willing to build on the wave machine you were so wrongly given credit for. Kudos,” Brolin wrote.

The 56-year-old lead actor ended his statement by thanking the viewers who have supported the series from day one.

“And above all, I thank the extremely loyal fans. Along with No Country For Old Men and Sicario, Outer Range is the title among the Kings that I am most often offered,” he wrote.

“Thank you too. See you… somewhere else.”

Set in Wyoming, Brolin plays Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting to save his land and family after a mysterious black hole is discovered on his property’s pasture.

This comes in the wake of the arrival of a drifter, Autumn (Imogen Poots), who has a connection to the Abbott ranch, and the disappearance of Abbott’s daughter-in-law, Rebecca.

The family is pushed even further to the brink when a rival family, the Tillersons, tries to take over their land.

In addition to Brolin and Poots, the cast includes Lili Taylor, Tom Pelphrey, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Olive Elise Abercrombie, Isabel Arraiza and Will Patton.

“Outer Range” premiered on Prime Video in April 2022 and continued with a second season in October of the same year.

At this time, the showrunner of the series also changed: Murray took over the role of Zev Borow.

Outer Range seemed to do well with critics, viewers and Nielson ratings, so the cancellation of the series is somewhat of a surprise, Forbes.

Amazon does not release viewership data for its shows, but “Outer Range” made it into the Nielsen Top 10 original streaming rankings, reaching third place in the week following its premiere.

The series also received good reviews from critics; on Rotten Tomatoes, the two seasons achieved an average approval rating of 85%.
