No Joey Chestnut? Who will win the hot dog eating contest?

No Joey Chestnut? Who will win the hot dog eating contest?

With Joey Chestnut eliminated from the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, last year’s runner-up Jeffery Esper is this year’s favorite, based on odds from international sportsbook Bet US

Chestnut will not participate in this year’s Fourth of July Independence Day contest because he has a marketing deal with Impossible Foods, which markets a competing plant-based hot dog.

Unlike in previous years, the biggest question before the competition will not be how many more hot dogs Chestnut will eat, but who will take his throne. Esper is number 2 in the Major League Eating rankings.

Favorites to win this year’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Esper, who has eaten 49.5 hot dogs in 2023, may be this year’s favorite, but two other contenders – James Webb and Nick Wehry – could give Esper a tough fight for the $10,000 first prize, according to odds at Bet US.

Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs at last year’s contest – his lowest hot dog count since 2015 – and still beat Esper by about 15 hot dogs.

This Fourth of July, however, Chestnut will not be without it. The 16-time champion will compete in a five-minute hot dog contest against soldiers at the Fort Bliss military base in El Paso, Texas. The contest at Coney Island lasts 10 minutes, but Chestnut says he hopes to beat the Nathan’s winner in half the time.

Who will win the women’s hot dog eating contest?

In the women’s event, Miki Sudo is the clear favorite to defend her title. The moneyline at Bet US is so heavily in her favor that you would have to bet $3,000 to win just $100.

Since 2014, Sudo, the world’s third-best eater, has won nine of the last 10 Nathan’s Famous competitions. She did not compete in 2021 because she was pregnant with her son.

Sudo won in 2023 with 39.5 hot dogs. She holds the Nathan’s Famous record of 48.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
