Hot K-pop star Ok Taec-yeon will star in a gay love story and we can’t wait to see it!

To expand its Japanese offering, Netflix is releasing Soulmatea new live-action series about a 10-year love story between two men.

According to a press release, the series explores “this profound journey of souls connecting and remaining connected over the years despite distance” and revolves around a man who left everything behind in Japan (Isomura Hayato) and is rescued by a boxer played by Taec-yeon, the lead singer of Korean boy band 2PM.

Although Netflix described the series as a “love story between two young men” in its own press release, many people expressed concern when the streaming giant posted about the upcoming show that it could turn out to be another example of queerbaiting or fall into the “bury your gays” cliche, according to Pink News.

One person commented: “Now tell me who dies at the end? Because I’m sure there won’t be a happy ending for them,” while someone else wrote: “Bromance or romance?? We deserve to know that queerbaiting is not cool!!”

Although we probably won’t know how gay the series is until it hits Netflix, actor Isomura has spoken about his co-star’s “charm” in real life while filming the romance.

“The script moved me with its story of love amidst grief and pain, and the incredible 10-year story arc created by director Hashizume really immersed me in the character,” he said. “Working with Ok Taec-yeon was inspiring; his charm captivates me more every day.”

It also sounds like viewers could be presented with a muscular Taec-yean who has trained for the role.

“The character of Johan Hwang fascinated me and his inner struggles and pain stayed with me long after reading the script,” said the 35-year-old K-pop singer. “In preparation, I lost weight and did boxing training. During filming, I continued to train hard to portray Johan as well as possible.”

Soulmate is not the only gay TV show that Netflix has given the green light. The streamer’s first Japanese same-sex dating show, The boyfriendwill air on July 9th.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Soulmate.
