Pink’s health issues over the years: hip surgery and more

With her powerful voice and impressive aerial acrobatics Pink is a force to be reckoned with – but offstage she has struggled with numerous health problems.

The “Who Knew” singer canceled two performances in Tacoma, Washington, in October 2023 in an Instagram statement, citing “family medical issues” that required her “immediate attention.”

Pink (real name Alecia Moore) did not provide any further details about the situation, but postponed two more shows in Vancouver, Canada a few days later due to a respiratory infection.

“My doctor has informed me that I will not be able to perform at the shows in Vancouver on Friday and Saturday,” she wrote on Instagram.

Pink announced that she and her then three-year-old son Jameson, whom she had with her husband Carey Hartrecently tested positive for COVID-19. (The duo also has a daughter together, Willow, whom they welcomed in 2011.)

During an Instagram live chat with her friend and author Jen PastiloffPink said she and Jameson were “really, really sick” and she had “never prayed more in her life.”

Later that month, the Grammy winner also spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about the experience. “It was awful at one point,” Pink told the talk show host during the virtual chat. “I had really, really bad asthma, so I would end up in the hospital sometimes. I would wake up in the middle of the night and I couldn’t breathe. I needed my nebulizer for the first time in 30 years. I couldn’t function without it. That’s when I started to get really scared.”

Pink later revealed that she had rewrote her will when she had the virus.

“It was really, really bad. … I thought it was over for us,” she said during a May 2021 appearance at Heart Radio Show. “I called my best friend and said, ‘You just have to tell Willow how much I love her.'”

December 2020

Pink has recovered from COVID, but the virus was not the last health threat she suffered in 2020.

“As if surviving Covid wasn’t enough for this crappy year!” the Pennsylvania native captioned a photo of herself in a doctor’s office. “So I got my stitches removed while drying the wine glass, that went well. Then I recovered from my first ever staph infection for no reason (cry for help?) (my right knee was lonely?) so I thought I was going to break my ankle!”

Pink added that she injured her ankle while “running down the stairs.”

The “So What” musician spoke about her ongoing recovery from hip surgery.

“It was a brutal first week of tears and depression from painkillers, ulcers from medications, and constant fevers,” Pink wrote on Instagram, before thanking her husband for taking such good care of her. “He brought me coffee in the shower, lugged my 100-pound CPM machines everywhere I went, dried my tears, made me oatmeal, kept track of my meds, got me my phone charger, plugged in my compression machines, took my temperature, made the bed, and reassured me.”

Pink added that it was “humiliating for a very independent person like me to be physically incapacitated and dependent,” but said she “learned the gift of accepting help.”

In addition to posting updates on her physical well-being, Pink has also spoken openly about her mental health.

“I was always having pretty bad panic attacks and I didn’t know what was going on. I had no one to talk to about it and I didn’t know what to do,” she said in an Instagram video. “I felt like I was having a stroke, stroke symptoms, it was horrible.”

The artist noted that after “several EKGs” showed there was nothing physically wrong with her, she began expanding her “spiritual toolbox” to cope with the panic attacks.

“I went to a therapist and then started doing all these things,” she said, mentioning “women-only full moon ceremonies” and meditation. “I started learning all these steps of how to take care of myself. I was never taught how to take care of myself.”

Pink told diversity that she gained 16 kg during the COVID-19 lockdown and had difficulty losing it immediately, “not only because of the hip surgery but also because of the double disc replacement in my neck.”

Despite the long recovery process, the songwriter said she felt like a “bionic woman” after the surgery and has since lost weight. “I’m stronger than I’ve ever been in my life,” she said.

October 2023

Days after canceling two shows in Tacoma, Washington, due to “family medical issues,” Pink postponed two more shows in Vancouver, Canada, due to a health crisis of her own.

“I am very sorry to announce that I have a respiratory infection and my doctor has informed me that I will not be able to perform at the Vancouver shows on Friday and Saturday,” she wrote on Instagram. “Live Nation is working on new dates to reschedule the shows. I am so excited to perform in Vancouver and put on an incredible show for everyone. In the meantime, I wish everyone good health and send lots of love. xoxo Pink.”

Pink reflected on the near-fatal overdose she took at age 16.

“On Thanksgiving 1995, I was at a rave party and overdosed,” she recalled during a 60 minutes Interview. “I was on – oh boy – ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of stuff.”

The pop star said that this experience convinced her to quit drugs. “Then I was out,” she said. “Done. Too much.”

Pink also spoke about the circumstances that led her to “go astray” as a teenager.

“I grew up in a house where my parents yelled at each other every day, threw things and hated each other. And then I started doing drugs,” she explained. “I sold drugs. And then I got kicked out of the house. I dropped out of high school.”

July 2024

Pink made headlines when she abruptly canceled a concert. She suggested her health was the reason, but did not say what happened.

“I am so sorry to have to cancel my show in Bern this Wednesday,” she wrote on social media in July 2024. “I am doing everything I can to ensure that I can perform for you every night, but after consulting with my doctor and reviewing all available options, I have been informed that I will not be able to continue with the show tomorrow.”

Alongside the message, Pink shared a black and white photo of herself on stage. “I was looking forward to being with you, making memories with you and sharing our show with you and am so disappointed that we have to cancel,” she concluded. “Sending love and health to all of you and truly hope to see you again soon. P!nk xoxo.”
