JEOPARDY host Ken Jennings was reprimanded for not accepting a contestant’s answer.

In Wednesday’s episode of the game show, returning champion Kelly Proulx competes against newcomers Issac Hirsch and Dana Keane.

In her first Jeopardy game on Tuesday, Kelly won a whopping $16,801.

In the Double Jeopardy round in the category “Don’t Go Jason,” 50-year-old Ken asked a question about Jason Schwartzman being kicked in the head in an Edgar Wright film.

Isaac was the first to answer and was just about right with his Scott Pilgrim answer, but he guessed “Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe.”

50-year-old Ken was keen to hear this, but Kelly quickly came up with the right answer: “Scott Pilgrim against the world.”

Scott Pilgrim is a comic book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the six original volumes of which were published between 2004 and 2010.

In order, these are the books “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, “Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness”, “Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe” and “Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour”.

In 2010, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” starring Michael Cera, Chris Evans, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Brie Larson became a box office hit.

WHAT FANS THINK

In an online forum on Reddit dedicated to the evening’s show, fans criticized Ken’s call to Scott Pilgrim.

One wrote: “The fact that Ken (apparently) doesn’t accept Scott Pilgrim and demands the full version of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World makes me wonder if there is a hard and fast rule about movie titles and subtitles.”

“Or is the jury part more based on mood? ‘Against the World’ is clearly given less emphasis in the film’s marketing materials.

“Would the entire Terminator 2 be Judgement Day or just Terminator 2?”

A second replied: “Isaac said ‘against the universe’ but in general it’s absolutely ‘mood based’.”

“There are other Scott Pilgrim media with other titles after the name, so that would probably influence whether they would charge for more than just the name,” a third pointed out.

A fourth wrote: “I would assume that titles that contain (or suggest) colons don’t require anything after the colon. I agree that ‘Scott Pilgrim’ is pretty clear.

Moderator timeline

Jeopardy! has had a turbulent hosting history since the death of the legendary Alex Trebek in 2020. Here are all the hosts since the game show’s inception in 1964.

Art Fleming – from 1964 to 1975 he was the original host of the daytime version of “Jeopardy!” on NBC.

Alex Trebek – 1984 to 2020, the late, great Alex hosted the modern version of Jeopardy! for 36 years until he died of pancreatic cancer.

Guest Hosts – From 2020 to 2021, Jeopardy! tested a number of guest hosts for one- or two-week stints, including Anderson Cooper, LaVar Burton, and Aaron Rodgers.

Mike Richards – 2021, he was appointed host for a week before resigning due to controversy. At the time, he was the executive producer of the show.

Mayim Bialik – 2021 to 2023, when Mike was announced as the new host of the show, Mayim was chosen to host tournaments and primetime specials.

Mayim and Ken Jennings – 2022 to 2023. 74-time champion Ken (the contestant with the longest winning streak of all time) joined Mayim as guest host and they shared hosting duties.

Ken Jennings – 2023 to present. Last December, Mayim announced on Instagram that she would “no longer” host Jeopardy! after an extended hiatus after joining the writers’ strike, and Ken was named sole host.

Ken now hosts all editions of Jeopardy!, including Celebrity Jeopardy!, the nightly show, and other primetime specials such as Masters.

“(However) I’m not at all surprised that they didn’t accept it – I can’t think of any other title that doesn’t require both halves of the ‘vs.'”

Someone else refuted the above person’s point: “However, if other Scott Pilgrim media are involved, then one could argue that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is ambiguous, since that is also the title of the second book.”

WHO WON THE GAME?

At the end of the first round, Isaac was in first place with $4,000, Dana was in second place with $3,900, and Kelly was in last place with $3,600.

At the end of the round, Isaac was well ahead of his competition with $18,000 and the others with $8,000 and $8,300.

The final Jeopardy question, based on historical women, puzzled all three players.

Kelly finished the race with $7,000 and Dana with $300.

Isaac finished with $19,185 and will continue his Jeopardy journey on Thursday’s episode.
