Ruth Reichl is a woman of many talents for which she has received much recognition. She has written five memoirs, a novel and the cookbook My kitchen yearShe is the former editor-in-chief of gourmeta restaurant critic for The New York Times and food editor for The Los Angeles TimesShe has received six James Beard Awards.

With that in mind, expectations are high for a novel full of food, art and fashion set in the exotic 1980s, and the author does not disappoint. Her story follows Stella, a woman whose mother has died and who has left her a one-way ticket to Paris, some cash and a note that says, “Go to Paris.”

Stella and her estranged mother were never close, and in fact, they bear no resemblance at all. It’s unlikely that Stella would go to a strange city alone, but eventually she decides to respect her mother’s final wishes, heads to Paris, begins a life as an oyster, and immerses herself completely in the world of art, culinary wonders, and a whole new lifestyle. She risks her identity as stable, cautious, and frugal for the more exciting world of Dior dresses and the people who wear them. As she reacts to this new style, she becomes a “tumbleweed” in a world-famous bookstore called Shakespeare and Company.

As she learns how to live among exotic authors and unusual people, she becomes entangled in a hundred-year-old mystery of a Manet painting and develops a passion for good food. Her journey is a true joy to read about. “This novel is a testament to how to live deliciously, take risks and find your true home.”

Even fashion falls into her realm, and she discovers the magnetic attraction of living spontaneously and rethinking her life choices. In the process, she learns a lot about the appeal of a life not governed by strict rules and routine. Amidst the excitement, the reader finds friends to accompany her as various authors stroll into this bookstore. Although it sounds unconventional, it is also full of delicious tips for food and the best wine to pair with it.

Be prepared to meet unusual people, food and the good life of the big wide world and to have the desire to jump right into the adventure.
