Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, the Kappa Rho Omega Chapter of Farmville, and the Lambda Delta Chapter of Longwood University, in partnership with the Fresh Girlz Club, have launched the Youth Leadership Institute (AKA YLI), a youth-led and interactive leadership program designed to foster healthy independence and self-determination for youth ages 11-13.
The YLI program focuses on a “learning by doing” approach through youth-led meetings, shared roles and responsibilities, decision-making, community service, environmental projects, and a final presentation.
Participants were trained to lead with knowledge, confidence and sound principles, make good life choices and become productive citizens and leaders. Monthly workshops covered a variety of topics such as social and life skills, goal setting, etiquette, health and grooming and career guidance. Other activities also included creating vision boards, developing business plans and planning meals on a budget. Participation in cultural and social events was also part of the program’s activities.
